This Week's Verdict |
Manohla Dargis,
The New York Times |
A Mighty Heart |
"And in its modest, at times awkward, way, this little movie with the big movie star tries to bring us into a conversation that, at least in this country, is often relegated to the bummer front pages of your daily paper or glimpsed on television in between diet tips and, yes, news about Brangelina.
" |
Oh the very obvious irony of it all.

J. Hoberman,
The Village Voice |
Sicko |
"The Weinstein Brothers, who produced and are co-distributing Sicko, might have ripped off the title of one of their greatest hits and called it Scary Movie." |
Seriously, who needs Eli Rothian horror and gore when living without health insurance provides all the suspense you could ever ask for.
|
|
Armond White,
New York Press |
A Mighty Heart |
"Not content to portray Mariane's suffering and perseverance, Pitt and Jolie bungled their compassion by hiring one of the worst contemporary filmmakers, Michael Winterbottom, to advance a modish perspective that denies the war on terror. 'I am not terrorized,' Jolie's smirking Marianne assures moviegoers. [...] As Pitt and Jolie must have wanted, Winterbottom avoids fundamental human feeling for smug, digital-video attitude." |
The nice thing about Armond White reviews is that they are unpredictable in their predictability (or is it the other way around?) You know White is going to go for the obvious weakness first, then take his angry critcism one step further in a direction you hadn't even considered.

Stephanie Zacharek,
Salon.com |
A Mighty Heart |
"There's no safety here: A Mighty Heart understands, deeply and intuitively, the nature of the changed and in some ways unfathomable world we now live in." |
Really? The world we now live in is changed and unfathomable, whereas it was once unchanging and unambiguous?

Dana Stevens,
Slate.com |
A Mighty Heart |
"Her French-Cuban accent is impeccable, her emotional weather precisely mapped, her subtly darkened skin and corkscrew wig convincing." |
It's nice that Dana Stevens takes upon herself to give kudos to the make-up department where no one else will.
